From the Publisher
Neurologists universally recommend making exercise a part of the daily regimen of every Parkinson's patient. This is the only book that tells people with the disease and their caregivers how to follow that advice. Movement teacher John Argue has distilled the information from his classes for Parkinson's patients into a comprehensive exercise program designed to help readers improve flexibility, balance, gait, and communication. Over 100 photographs clearly illustrate the exercises, which derive from Yoga and Tai Chi techniques and theater movement skills, and encompass a variety of daily activities.

This book is a revelation and John Argue is a genius at what he does here. The book is very clearand concise -- easy for everyone to understand and follow. This man knows what he's talking about. Many of the exercises seem deceptively simple and easy but, believe me, they are all focusedon exactly what you need and they build upon one another beautifully. The best way to use it isto follow the program as everything works in a concerted way. Later on you will be doing thingsyou may have thought you couldn't do but all these small exercises have brought you to thatpoint. He's also a very very interesting, compassionate human being with a vast knowledge ofmany disciplines he calls upon. Think it might be too challenging for you? Think again. If youare breathing you can work with this program. For myself just using the "yawning" exercise hasopened up my body in ways that it desperately needs from my swallowing to breathing to relaxingand expanding my tight shoulders, chest, neck back and throat. Just yawning, folks. He knowsexactly what he's doing. This man is a genius at this and, by the way, he was preaching exercisefor PD patients when absolutely, universally, the medical industry was snubbing it's nose atexercise and really making it seem like exercise was bad for those with PD. He also has videoswhich are siimple and slow and easy to follow if you like that. The book is completely clear andeverything is illustrated, though. This book has been my biggest gift to help me deal with PD.I truly hope that everyone who is touched by PD brings Mr. Argue into their lives.
This book came in such good shape. I'm so glad I got it for my mom, it has been of a lot of help.
This book reveals more than I expected about how to counter the symptoms of Parkinson's by deliberately practicing movements. The author has an understanding of the challenges faced by PD sufferers. I've found re-affirmation of some of my own deductions about moving better by intentionally visualizing an action before willing to accomplish a movement. I am convinced that exercise is the best medicine to slow the progression of this disease. The author's experience conducting exercise classes in conjunction with medical institutions makes his suggested exercise routine invaluable. I've never heard many of the insights offered in this volume anywhere else. For example, there's a section explaining the benefits of yawning. Another section tells how to use gravity to help turn over in bed.I've added exercises from this book to my attempt to counter PD symptoms. I was diagnosed ten years ago. Right now, I attend water exercise and Tai Chi classes, walk at least twenty minutes a day, square dance or contra dance at least twice a week, and do several exercises from a physical therapist to improve my posture. With the latest findings about the plasticity of the brain, I think that we should concentrate on moving more to develop new neural pathways which over-ride the old habitual movements that used to be 'automatic." This book is a good place to start because it contains strategies to ameliorate specific PD symptoms before they develop.
this is IMHO one of the better books on PD
Parkinson's Disease is about movement and fighting PD is about movement, too. This book is a valuable resource for the person fighting PD and his/her caretakers. The variety of movement and understanding why to do various exercises helps to keep the person moving. And the constant movement and exercises keeps the PD from taking over. It replaces a giving-up attitude with a can-do attitude because the intentional activity shows clear results. This book by itself is not enough, of course. But this book provides help and information for the team of patient, physical therapist, doctor, and other professionals.
Have not had the chance to put all the information into motion yet. However, the book looks to cover many options to lessen rigidity and to improve modality. Adds hope to one's diet!
The Lesson 2 Voice and Speech is one of the most important exercises needed for dealing with Parkinson's because the quality of the voice deteriorates daily. Working daily with breathing exercises, learning to counteract the "mask" face will help to let people see the iner liveliness.
Very informative and organized to meet different levels of need. Very good photo illustrations.
