About the Author

UMBERTO ECO (1932–2016) was the author of numerous essay collections and novels, including The Name of the Rose,The Prague Cemetery, and Inventing the Enemy. He received Italy's highest literary award, the Premio Strega, and was named a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur by the French government. Eco was an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Like with any collection of Eco's writing, it has moments of beauty and insight, and then occasional "old man yells at cloud" sections. However, this posthumous collection feels more like odds and ends of Eco's thinking than a definitive last statement.Again, there are some great things here, but this feels less like one last conversation with a trusted mentor than rummaging through their things after they have passed.

I wonderful book, as if the reader were sitting at a table with Umberto Eco at a open air plaza in Italy talking about world events, religion, politics, education, technology and other topics. Humberto Eco is pure genius with a rare ability to filter. This book can be re read.

This is a terrific book of essays that really makes you think about life in our society. I do wish that Umberto Éco was still alive so he could write about president Trump.

Even when not all the essays have the same depth and interest, Eco always manage to surprise the reader with unknown facts.It is amusing and worth reading.

Umberto Eco was an Italian novelist, philosopher and literary professor. He was born in 1932, and raised in fascist Italy. As a child he spent some time in air raid shelters during World War II. He died last year, 2016. His novel, Foucault's Pendulum has been “nagging” me for a read. His first novel is a detective story, and much more, set in the Middle Ages, The Name of the Rose. Regrettably, I have read none of Eco, so when the Vine Program offered me this posthumously published collection of his essays, I felt it would be a good introduction to his thinking.This is a collection of 115 essays, which have been grouped into 13 categories, which include “On Books,” “On Cell Phones,” “On Conspiracies,” and “From Stupidity to Folly.” The essays are one to three pages long, and are reprints of his regular column “La bustina di Minerva,” which appeared in the Italian weekly magazine, “L’Espresso.” Virtually all the essays were written in the last 17 years. By “Liquid Society” Eco means a society that is increasingly fragmented, with the larger groupings of religion, ideology or nationality no longer relevant, and a society that is rapidly changing. He is an independent and often original thinker, and many of his ideas hit points of resonance with me.Personally, I have felt “underweighted” on the Italian perspective. Silvio Berlusconi, their scandal-ridden Prime Minister, is a backdrop in several essays. I had largely forgotten about the kidnapping and murder of their Prime Minister Aldo Moro in 1978 by the Red Brigades. The Pope and the weight of Roman history are also features in the background, but the essays mainly reflect an Italian perspective on the modern world.Eco’s range of concerns is wide. In his essay “On the Obsolescence of digital media” he notes that it is virtually impossible to retrieve any data that had been stored on a floppy disk in 1983 – since virtually no one has a disk drive that can read one – yet one can easily read from a 500-year-old book (whose pages have not disintegrated!). The next essay is on Salinger’s J. D. Salinger: The Catcher in the Rye (Paperback); 2001 Edition), and its impact on Italian youth of the era. Eco admits he only read it ten years ago, and was “unmoved.” He raises the question why certain books seem to work only for a certain historical period, and cannot transcend them. Eco essays also frequently refer to Marcel Proust, calling Salinger’s work: “…the Proustian madeleine for Italian adolescents of the 1960s.”The largest section of essays is on “Religion and Philosophy.” I found them unremarkable in general, perhaps since I am largely in agreement with his tolerant, humanist outlook, and his concerns about the deleterious impact of organized, doctrinaire religion on human welfare. He updates Marx a bit, and more, when he calls organized religion the “cocaine of the people,” since opium seems to have a more tranquilizing impact.I fully agree with his points concerning the present-day addiction to cell phones, but feel that he became too Luddite for me. As for a poor auto-didactic like me (and aren’t we all, is one of my favorite quips), I took exception to Eco’s comment: “But deciding what is worth remembering, and what is not, is a subtle art. This marks the difference between those who have passed through formal education, however poorly, and those who are self-taught, however brilliantly.” A couple of other statements that forced me to place a big “?” in the margin: “In short, assuming that members of the clergy were celibate, along with those who more or less admitted their homosexuality…” (p. 155) and “I don’t want to be misunderstood: for historical and religious reasons the Jews had every right to head for Palestine – they settled peacefully over the course of a century – and every right to remain there.” (p. 149).Overall, worthwhile essays venturing an Italian viewpoint. 4-stars.

I'm a fan of Umberto Eco - and I love this book. It is a collection of tiny essays that expand on contact with minds!. The essays are taken from a series Mr. Eco wrote for a periodical, and another serieswritten for a blog. They are mostly under 1000 words, and are observations about just about everything. Frequent topics are technology, politics, social mores, and science.As a writer I found these essays to be enlightening. They are clearly written, but unpolished, so Mr. Eco reveals a bit more of this thought process here than in most of his other books - we see evolving thought here, whereas most of his other books are polished and refined thought.Chronicles of a Liquid Society is one of those books that I'll keep around for easy access, to dip into when I want to read something fast and furious. These tiny essays are the sort that pique your curiosity and get you thinking - read one quickly, then ruminate about it as you go through your day. I highly recommend this.
