Employees want to do something that matters, they want to understand why they're doing what they do. They want to have a positive impact, and they want to feel appreciated. We, as managers, often forget these very basic components. Blanchard's book is a great and easy to read reminder of how to build enthusiasm. It is a simple concept, but challenging to consistently implement. If you read and succeed in the implementation of the principles contained in the book, you will have a productive and motivated team.
I hate self help type business books...typically can't get through a chapter. BUT I really enjoyed this book. Even though it's a self help business book there's enough story in it to keep you interested and the points it makes are easily applied and are delivered in an easy to read fashion. Great book!

No. Will it provide a framework for conversation and place from which to begin? Absolutely. Do the animals and native American lore resonate with all readers and cultures? Probably not. I first got introduced to this book through one of my leadership college courses. After reading just the first part of it, I was hooked. Ken Blanchard and Sidney Bowles have once again hit the mark in providing a simple common sense approach to leading employee engagement in your organization.I work in a food manufacturing plant and instilled the Gung Ho! principles on one production line as a plant pilot project and in just months there was an increase of productivity and a decrease in line waste, employee absenteeism and negative behavior. The line management on the remaining production lines begged to have Gung Ho for their line employees. I would recommend everyone to look past the parable story and focus on the facts of the principles themselves.Oh and for those of you who rated this book negatively, you probably need Gung Ho more than you even realize.I would rate it 10 stars if I could
This is a book that excited me with possibilities and outlined the potential in our situation. It offered some really common sense suggestions on how to motivate people and productivity that just tend to go against our nature as bosses/employers. It was recommended to us, and took us a while to get around to reading it, but I highly recommend it.
Gung Ho! tells the story of how a new manager of an under-performing factory, Walton Works #2, was able to turn it around into one of the best-performing plants within her organization, that being her threshold to her career success. The story explains in a very simple and clear manner the three main attributes of a well-motivated organization, their importance and their siginifcance within that organization.The book is brief and yet explains its main ideas in sufficient detail, and they seem very logical too. This book falls short of being five stars only because it says very little or nothing on how to actually implement the recommendations in the book, and what to emphasize and what to avoid. The book is mainly the experience of one group of people, so you may need to take a different approach to implementing the same ideas. Overall, however, this is definitely a very good book on organizational motivation.
Gung Ho does an exellent job of boiling down how people make organizations successful. Get your people involved by explaining the necessity of their job and let them decide whether to stay or go. Then hold them accountable for doing their job and you have happy people who understand the value of what they do and they will do it well. Gung Ho uses simple ideas to help achieve great success. All businesses are pretty much the same and really pretty simple to make successful. Unfortunately, we often end up complicating the job instead of making it simple...and fun...and enjoyable and we fail. Gung Ho is all about doing what common sense dictates in getting employees involved in the concern for success of an organization. Every business leader and manager should be required to keep a copy of Gung Ho on their desk or close to it.

I've read this book and used it in work Culture Development programs 6 times and every time it is the best. Simple, deceptively simple. And clear, functional, practical. This is a principle focused, people centered masterpiece and a true story. Genius.
