This was an interesting book showing how many people in England lived in the service of other people during the 19th century. For its time these were pretty good jobs with good accommodation and little physical labor. If you compare these jobs to working in a foundry or a coal mine in the 19th century you can see why many preferred this life! The author wants to point out how how these employees were unable to self develop themselves and lived in drudgery with long hours. Look around the world today! It ain't no different!! Victorian life in England was based around the aristocratic and wealthy class at a time when England ruled the world economy. Many people could afford servants and why not!! It all ended after WW1 and the world recession in the 1930,s. An interesting book.

If you, like me, enjoy little snippets of information about times past, you will enjoy this book. It isn't so much a history book as a slice of life view of an era which lasted into our great-grandparents' lives. And how some traditions began that last to this day. It's an easy read or you can dip into it whenever you feel like taking yourself back in time. Our romanticized view of the Victorian age doesn't stand up well to the reality of the time. Unless you were one of the "1%" you were facing a rough life. However it does make us realize the power of the Industrial Age and how much we have -and utterly take for granted (running water, anyone?) -thanks to them!

Haven't finished it yet. Just got the sample, but it reminds me of Downton Abbey PBS series and I would have to say sounds accurate according to the PBS show. How the aristocrats and Lord and Ladies lived in their castles and how the downstairs staff (maids, footmen, cooks, and butlers) lived. I am looking for a descriptive history of Nanny Life and their work in these homes in the 1800s and 1900s, Nanny is never mentioned and I am wondering if she was considered part of the Downstairs Staff or more of an Upstairs staff, like the Ladies Maids? if anyone can refer me to a book or biography as I am a Nanny regarding nanny life during those times, I would be most appreciative. I may buy this book as I am interested in this time period, especially British aristocracy and history.

I really enjoyed going back in time and observing the mistresses (high and low) as they dealt with finding servants. I actually could not put this book down and when it ended I was shocked...what, no more? Gives a great look into the lives of the large Manor houses as well as the shopkeeper around the corner. I was hoping for more than just the search for servants. What about the menu's, sex & love, and raising the children? Highly recommend it to readers who are interested in the minutiae of Victorian life.

I found the book to be very informative about the up keep of the Victorian era, but was hoping to get more details than it gave.Possibly because it was a short book and to get all the information I would have liked, I would have to buy at least 3 more booksin that series. If you want to know what roles the servants played in that time, this is an interesting book. Can easily be read inone sitting.

I wish I'd spotted the page count before I ordered this. At 96 pages, there's really not room for the close examination of Victorian household life I was looking for. But it's a decent overview and a good jumping-off point for further research.

I think this book is excellent! I'm working on a novel set in the Victorian era and "Life in a Victorian Household" was geared very much toward servants, which was just what I needed to read up on. It's clear and easy to read and chock full of real life examples and historical quotes. If you need a book like this for research, I highly recommend it.

Again, I've been doing some research into how victorian era homes worked and this was really quite good, but it didn't have the little details I'd have liked and it was a bit too like a novel. Some of the help was 'named' to give some color and life to the history, but it wasn't necessary -- it was really colorful and alive without that. All in all, I think it described the kitchens the best, and since that is what I wanted to know about, this book really worked for me.
