Turner's use of a FAQ format is annoying at best. The book reads as if it is collection of research notes, rather than a developed manuscript. Obviously well-researched, the book's value is greatly diminished by its format and lack of a comprehensive index.

great book for science fair projects
While this book is naturally going to be of most interest to Illinois residents or tourists, any student interested in the Underground Railroad would benefit from the extensive background that Turner provides into the Underground Railroad in general as well as the stories about its leaders and the people who traveled it.Most of the book is written in the format of a very extensive FAQ, but with questions for the students to answer and references to further reading embedded in the text.While the reading level is at a middle school to high school sophomore level, older readers will still find the stories and the wonderful collection of archival photographs fascinating.The biggest weakness of the book is that it's written as an FAQ but the table of contents does not list the individual questions and answers. This is worsened by a very limited index that doesn't include many of the places or people who were mentioned only in passing. This is astonishing for an educational publishing house and would bring the book down half a star if Amazon allowed.
